TurkStat's updated greenhouse gas inventory shows Türkiye's 2023 emissions rose 6.9 percent year-on-year to 598.9 million tonnes of CO₂ equivalent — the highest level on record. Emissions have roughly 2.5 times since 1990, underscoring the urgency of the ETS and Climate Law implementation.

TurkStat Greenhouse Gas Emission Statistics Updated — Türkiye Reaches Record Levels

The Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) published its updated greenhouse gas emission statistics covering the 1990–2023 period. According to the revised bulletin, Türkiye's total greenhouse gas emissions in 2023 rose 6.9 percent compared with the previous year, reaching 598.9 million tonnes of CO₂ equivalent — the highest level in the country's history.

By sector, energy-related emissions accounted for the largest share at 73.8 percent, followed by agriculture, industrial processes and product use, and the waste sector. Per capita greenhouse gas emissions rose to 7 tonnes in 2023, compared with 4.1 tonnes in 1990. Overall, total emissions have increased approximately 2.5-fold since 1990.

These figures underscore the scale of the challenge Türkiye faces in reaching its 2053 net-zero emissions target and highlight the urgency of implementing both the Emissions Trading System and the Climate Law.
